Half-Time Expedition Analysis // Rush Labs

Tasman Trespasser II has clocked up over 30 days now and Shaun has rowed a little over half way across the Tasman. Rush Labs, one of the small support teams behind the scenes, has pulled together some analysis taking everyone a little closer into the detail of Shaun’s route. The images step through Shaun’s route week by week with analysis showing relative speeds Shaun set during the trip so far. Further images compare Shaun’s progress with that of the Crossing the Ditch expedition and the Rush Labs team are endeavouring to digitize Colin Quincey’s route for another great comparison.

  1. Keep up the bloody good work Shaun absolutely loving being able to log on in the morning and follow someone else across!!
Pat// Good job keeping us all in the loop.
John Miles// Define good weather…we had 6 days out of 62 where we had prevailing winds. From an energy perspective it was much more efficient for us to paddle together rather than split up and as you know from our book when we didn’t paddle, we moved backwards (not drift forward)!

Land in Oakura, not the Port so we can open the NPOB Bar for the boys!

Shaun you are doing an awesome job mate. Keep it up. Remaining mentally tough with so much going wrong is the hardest part and you seem to have that sorted. I was part of the Base 3 team in 2007 and the reasons we got across so fast was firstly because we had 4 crew and rowed 24/7 which meant we didn’t drift bacwards and secondly because the prevailing winds and currents are more favourable going from NZ to Oz. Will try to get Rush Labs a copy of our route to add to the stats.

  4. wow the tracking/comparison stuff is great! q dawg great work on the progress so far mate – keep it up big guy!

  5. Hi mate, A lot has happened since I had that interview with you. After all the running around you did to get in the place you are well done so far and keep it up.
Look forward to doing an interview with you when you get here.
    Stay safe,

  6. G’day Shaun, this whole epic adventure is amazing. It will make a great book or movie. Keep up the inspirational work. This journey is a tribute to alot of hard work from many exceptional supporters you have. We are all willing you onwards in our household and places of work. I look forward to meeting you some day. Keep it up!!!

Hi Rush Labs- as I recall from the time, the Base 3 team lost 10 days under sea anchor but rowed 24 hours a day when weather was good. From the CTD kayakers book, they seemed to take it as a holiday, only paddling during the day and spend days watching DVD’s drifting to NZ rather than get on with it. Why was one person not paddling 24 hours a day in good weather they had 2 crew? CTD should put a scanned copy of their ships log on this forum so everyone can see why it took so long and what ships they met on the way. I found the Base 3 row on the Base website, perhaps try their contact numbers and see if they have a direct contact.

Sunday nite, about to go to bed, what a nuisance the water maker breaking, surely someone can send you a message and help you fix it..I am sure Bucky will help solve the problem, sure hope so..Went for a paddle in my kayak today from Little Shoal bay under the bridge and into Shoal bay and back..passed or met the Spririt of Adventure on the way, looked magnificent…..Hmmmm thought of you on my paddle What a guy….keep going Shaun…YEAH congratulations on 1/2 half way, now it is all down hill
Take cae we are all thinking of you..the Sheerans

  11. John Miles // great idea. Do you know where we can get info on the Base3 teams route/track. That would fantastic alongside Colin’s track if we can get a good level of detail. 32 days! still amazes me, what an effort by Steve and crew. For those that missed Base 3. http://www.basefx.com.au/expeditions.php

Perhaps Rush Labs should also do an analysis of the Australian team that rowed from the same port Colin Quincy left from in NZ and arrived in Australia after 32 days at sea. How is it possible the CTD took 62 days with the fastest boat2 people, a following current and predominant wind to NZ, when the hard way from NZ to AUS took 63 days (solo 1976)and 32 days (2007). Perhaps they wanted it to take so long for the media angle? Lets ask Terry Wise what about the yatch the CTD met off NZ and support?

  13. Hi support team, what a fantastic job !!!, your doing on behalf of Shaun !!!!. We’re all hoping everyone can solve the problems Quincey’s got with the water maker ,but if there are any additional hint’s that can make the journey more comfortable & bearable for Quincey ,then go to http://www.caske.org/survival/survivesea.htm .There are lot’s of point’s which i’m sure Shaun would know, but maybee there’s a couple of new one’s for you. There are to many ,to list , so better you go to the site yourself !!!. One point even say’s it’s safe to drink up to 32 oz of sea water a day ( maybee you have to weigh up, or talk to professinal’s about this claim, before advising Shaun). For Shaun stay strong, your absolutely AMAZING !!!!,see you in New Plymouth,in a few weeks !!!!!

  14. Jack Becker says:

Hi my name is Jack Becker and I am 5 and a half. I hope you get your water pump fixed soon. Have you seen any more sharks or whales? Bye bye.

  15. Hi Quincey Big day out at Piha yesterday, big surf and plenty of carnage, better for some than others, 4 Mairangi crews made it into the semi’s and 2 into the final, 1 being the muds of course, it did end up as a bit of a makeup crew, Gribbs smashed his fingers up last week so could not row so we had a fill in from Piha then Salty took my place after I copped an oar in the face(broken jaw 3 places, food through a straw for the next 6 weeks yippie)Both crews hammered in final, plenty of swimming. Hope you had a better day than me and have sorted watermaker probs. Keep positive – Eagle
