Whales & Dolphins // Day 45
Today was better than expected for Shaun since he did not lose any ground west, but rather made a few miles as the wind pushed him further north. It looks like he’s being drawn home to Auckland!
This last part of the journey, inside 400km, is the most important! Its crucial that Shaun keeps to his routines and makes good decisions and he tends to remind us of this rather than the other way around which shows that he is still mentally sound! Its still amazing just how positive he is! Even as some adverse weather is currently rolling in and he may lose up to 100km, Shaun still manages to crack a joke and usually sees the glass half full!
As the titles eludes to, Shaun spent a good portion of this afternoon being entertained by a small pod of whales and some dolphins. Its going to be amazing to see all the footage he’s captured over the course of the trip!

Great info in your post, I saw a report on tv last week about this same thing and since I am getting married in 2 weeks and the timing couldn’t have been better! Thanks for the post!

We will see you in the morning…Best of landings The Sheerans Your Mum must be bursting with pride
Great to be able to follow your progress, and so good to see you are on the home straight! All the best! Looking forward to the T.V. report. P.S. You could auction the T(P)Shirt on Trade Me!!
You had better get going towards the naki- you were on the front page of the paper down there this morning. I think that they are expecting you.
Matt are you on something or are you an insensitive gumboot? Shaun’s family & the rest of NZ don’t want to read the crap you write. Try to be intelligent.
Keep it up . You will get there and we are all proud of you so just keep it up mate.
Hay Quincey,
Awesome to see that you are still chugging along. Could you push some surf our way for Surf Nats hehe. Not too big tho – i got smashed at NRCs haha. Loads of gosss to tell you but i’m sure Bucky has got to that stuff first haha.
Keep smiling suga.
Me
Keep rowing and meeting whale mates Q. Ive just been looking at dishwashers… I know what I would rather be doing! enjoy you last few days/weeks in the wild!
Hi Quincey fans. If Shaun ends up paddling into the Naki then I will be organising a flotilla to welcome him in. You are welcome to join us and can hire sea kayaks off us if needed, but you do need to have some open water experience. If you are a little nervous with wind and swells then its not a problem to stay in the harbour. Like you, we think he is awesome! Contact us @ Canoe & Kayak NP. Ph 06 7695506. GO QUINCEY! You have our prayers and thoughts, we are all getting excited here in the Naki!
Keeping tabs on you every day, sending all positive thoughts like many others, who sit at home and only imagine what you are going through, physically and mentally, keep it up Shaun.. Looking at your route it looks like the spirit of the Tasman is taking you to Hokianga !!! now that would be something !!!
Best wishes
Robin.
Hey Quincey, you’re doing great matey! Keep trucking along and can’t wait to see you back on dry land real soon. Thinking of you.
In a few weeks you’ll be sitting at a desk, wishing you were back out there savoring those last strokes. While there’s good reason not to want to stay out there forever, enjoy these last miles, no rushing, just steady-as-she-goes.
Keep positive as the Aussies use those easterlies to try to pull you back towards the big brown country – probably just so they can claim you as their own.
You’re inside the last quarter of your amazing expedition and know now that when you finish this you will walk down the street and people will seek you out or point you as… that’s the guy who rowed the Tasman on his own “…soemthing you will carry all your life that will bond you and your father forever.
You are special Quincey…one in a million. Keep up the great work see you soon
Ah the pull of home. Fantastic to hear that you are mentally on to it still and making the calls you need to when you need to. No surprise there mate. You’ve taken what the Tasman can throw, the next couple of days might do so again but “visualise”. Heaps of us following the amazing effort. Loz
Good work Bucky Shaun is lucky to have you leading the land team!
