In 1977, Shaun Quincey, Father to Colin Quincey, made the world’s first crossing from New Zealand to Australia doing so solo by rowing.

At approximately midday today New Zealand’s latest legend, Shaun Quincey, put his feet back on NZ soil after 54 days at sea!
After a campaign that was marred by setbacks, Shaun can finally claim to be the first man to row solo from Aussie to NZ after his father, Colin, completed the same feat in the opposite direction some 35 years ago! The final hurdle, the landing, was the most dangerous of the whole trip as 3m+ swells slammed into 90 mile beach forcing Shaun to ditch his boat in the surf break and swim the rest of the way in whilst TT2 surfed and rolled its way to shore!
Shaun and his support team would like to thank the sponsors and supporters who turned up to Ahipara early this morning to drive up and down 90mile beach as Shaun’s landing changed a few times. After talking to Shaun he was absolutely stoked to be on NZ sand and to see his family and friends once again.

The Boat

Shaun Quincey will be rowing a Woodvale Ocean Rowing boat. A fibre glass and plywood
construction with a Kevlar coating for added protection. Boat Balast is 150litres of fresh water stored in the hull. The Stern Cabin with be for sleeping and will also house the GPS,Deep cycle battries, VHF radio, Satilite phones, ipod and First Aid Equipment and EPIRB. The Bow compartment will hold the Parachute Drouges / Sea anchors, Food spare rope, emergency knife. Shaun will carry 60 days worth of food and 10 days emergancy rations.

Colin Quincey’s Tasman Trespasser One

Colin Quincey’s self built yorkshire dory was constructed to withstand a full force tropical cyclone. The plywood and fibre glass boat was lacking todays modern wonders of Global positioning systems and satilite phones. Colin self navigated his way across the Tasman using a sextant and dead reconing. Having to carry his own water the entire hull was filled with 900 pounds of fresh water. The open top boat had a Radar Reflector and VHF radio aerial even though he communicated with no one over the course of his expedition.

Jan 2010. Shaun Quincey will row solo from Australia to New Zealand. If successful, Shaun will be the only solo rower, other than his father, completing the first ever Tasman Crossing in 1977. Following in the footsteps of his father, Shaun Quincey will depart Australia in November, rowing the Tasman Sea from West to East, solo with no assistance. Shaun will battle a distance of 2200km as well as 10m swells and one of the most treacherous seas in the world. Taking an estimated 50 Days, Tasman Trespasser 2 will be an epic adventure.

Shaun appears to be resting. His drift is now Northerly and you will note the 10min track markers are much closer together. We are not able to show a distance legend however Shaun appears to be 30km from shore.
