In fact Orcon is Shaun’s Silver Sponsor.
Reliable communication with Shaun as he has been undertaking this massive adventure has been vital to not only the success of the campaign, but also Shaun’s safety. Orcon has provided one of their great broadband and phone packages at Shaun’s base here in NZ to ensure that the crew on the ground here is able to be in contact with Shaun and track his progress.

For the majority of the day there was minimal wind but Shaun battled against east moving swells. At about 4pm the winds finally turned to Westerlies and he started to make good progress toward NZ.

Today Shaun cleaned the hull of Tasman Trespasser 2, for the last time ever, and also got the boat fully ready for the strong winds that are coming over the next few days.

He saw another whale and started seeing rubbish which was strangely comforting for him!

One big worry for Shaun is that he is down to his last few squares of TP!

Can you imagine 7 weeks of solitary confinement in a space so large that you cannot see anything but water and sky in every direction. A space who’s unpredictable nature can change from being calm one day to treacherous the next with the only place to hide being a coffin-like box! In order to escape the situation you aim for the closest and safest place to land only to be swept 100’s of miles off course and all the while your only contact with the rest of the world is through a cell phone! This has been the life of Shaun Quincey for the past 49 days! And whilst the above does paint a grim picture, there have been a vast amount of incredible highs that will make his expedition unforgettable for not only himself but for all followers.

I’m sure you’ve probably been quite alarmed at Shaun’s movement over the past few days. He has been experiencing strong southerlies that have pushed him well north of his planned route. Over the next few days he will experience some very strong SW that will push him home faster but in a NE direction. This means that Taranaki and Auckland are well out of the landing equation. In speaking with him tonight, his new goal is Hokianga Harbour which is very fitting since it was the departure venue for Colin Quincey and Tasman Trespasser 1 over 30 years ago! Its almost as if he is being drawn to that location and hopefully within a week Tasman Trespasser II will hit solid ground. However, as we’ve experienced many times over the past 7 weeks, the Tasman is so unpredictable that our estimations mean nothing!

Make sure that over the next few days you keep a close eye out on this page for updates on his arrival and then make plans to be present for this historical event!

Now available In 35 countries, the Sea to Summit heritage is one of adventure and risk and that is what appealed to us when Shaun decided to undertake his mission to row the Tasman. We thought he’d get wet, exposed by the sun, cold & hungry and so we sent him some of our trusty dry-bags, lightweight towels, Mullet Cap & a Reactor sleeping liner to help keep warm at night. As we are also a distributor for 29 brands in Australia we were able to partner up with Backcountry Cuisine (from Invercargill) for some good old Southland made freeze-dried delights and a Jetboil stove from the USA to keep those brews brewing day & night.

Sold in over 35 countries, Sea to Summit has been awarded industry design and media awards both at home and abroad. But gaining international recognition has not however compromised the original ethos of the company. In 2010 – the 20th year anniversary – Sea to Summit will launch the unique Travelling Light range, as well as the world’s lightest warmth-to-weight ratio sleeping bag. We also hope to paddle, climb, hike and ski to some great spots around the world.

All of this has been made possible by the support of the retailers who have stocked Sea to Summit for the past two decades. We hope to return that support by continuing to make products which are profitable on the retail floor and by providing a customer service that helps your business run smoothly. Reliable well-packaged product, attractive retail prices, key retailer margins, consistent stock levels and fast delivery times are all part of the goals we set ourselves at Sea to Summit.

When financial times are as fickle as some of those Eighties’ fashion fads, it is worth remembering that outdoor people will always find escape in the outdoors. To be part of this industry is a not only a privilege, it is a way of life. Long may it continue.

He did however manage a big day of rowing and had approximately 35km of east progress to show for his efforts. He says the boat feels heavy,so tomorrow he plans to give the bottom another scrub which will hopefully make the last leg home speedy!

As at 8pm tonight Shaun was directly west of the Manukau Harbour at a distance of approximately 460km. This is in stark contrast to 4 days ago where he was approximately the same distance west of Taranaki! This shows what he has been battling with weather wise and with strong SW predicted from Wednesday till Monday, the hope of a Taranaki landing has pretty much vanished. Even an Auckland landing is now looking increasingly unlikely with the Kaipara area more of a possibility. Wherever he does land I’m sure there will be a huge amount of proud kiwis waiting to cheer his incredible feat!

SHAUN QUINCEY’S PHYSICAL PREPARATION
As part of Shaun’s preparation for the physical and mental challenges of his expedition, Shaun was training as a sponsored athlete of CrossFit Auckland up to five days per week to raise his level of general physical preparedness. Beyond everyday functionality, CrossFit helped ensure Shaun’s body runs as efficiently as possible – all the right muscles working and firing in the right sequence. Shaun’s needs differ from the normal CrossFitter in that we adjusted his training to the longer duration work required of him. More emphasis was placed on Strength-Endurance, Cardiovascular and Respiratory Endurance, Stamina and Recovery!

There are some neat photos of Shaun performing CrossFit workouts on this web page: http://crossfitauckland.com/crossfit-auckland-sponsored-athlete/

While training at CrossFit Auckland, our members got into the spirit of Shaun’s adventure by participating in a 63km team indoor row. The 63km was chosen to honor Shaun’s father, Colin Quincy – the first man to row the Tasman solo and unassisted; it took Colin 63 days to cross the Tasman. The Tasman Trespasser Challenge will be an annual event at CrossFit Auckland, and we look forward to Shaun’s continued involvement as a valued member of our club and CrossFit family.
View the Tasman Trespasser Challenge photo gallery: http://crossfitauckland.com/tasman-trespasser-challenge-2009/

WHAT IS CROSSFIT?

CrossFit methodology recognizes ten general physical attributes. These are Cardiovascular/Respiratory Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Co-ordination, Agility, Balance, and Accuracy. You are as fit as you are competent in each of these ten attributes of fitness. We believe that fitness is about performing well at any and every task imaginable. We manipulate each of the energy systems that power all human function to achieve all-round athleticism.

CrossFit workouts are constantly varied, you can expect workouts to include anything from callisthenic bodyweight exercises like squats, sit-ups and burpees, to using a variety of equipment like medicine balls, kettlebells and box jumps, gymnastic based movements such as ring dips and pull-ups, to weightlifting with barbells and dumbbells. CrossFit Auckland does not have a cardio room with treadmills, elliptical trainers, bikes and the like, in fact you will never again exercise on resistance or cardio machines. We strive to blur the line between “cardio and strength” training, as nature has no regard for this distinction; we blend our programming to match the uncertainty of life.

CrossFit training is functional and constantly varied. This constant variation will increase your all-round athleticism, and reduces the likelihood of you getting bored with your training. In-fact the opposite is true… CrossFit training is so addictive – you’ll want to constantly challenge yourself!

TRAINING YOU FOR YOUR REAL WORLD
CrossFit Auckland focuses on training your body to move the way it is meant to – increasing your energy, health and physical performance. We increase your levels of general athleticism by training you through constantly varied exercise sequences – the body is then forced to adapt.

All exercises prescribed in the “Workout of the Day” (WOD) are adaptable to suit your personal fitness and skill level, and will help you reach your fitness goals faster and more effectively than any other programme out there. Because the CrossFit method is designed for scalability, it’s perfect for any committed individual regardless of age, fitness or experience.

Unlike commercial gyms, CrossFit Auckland does not offer open gym hours, we have a “closed class” booking system; our members train with an expert coach or coaches every time they workout. Workouts are 100% supervised, and you are coached every step of the way to achieve amazing results.

At any CrossFit affiliated club throughout the world, you are certain to meet amazing athletes, but the majority of people are everyday people who have found a sport and community they enjoy being a part of!

Their dedication drives us to look beyond the conventional ideas of industry standards.

As the undisputed leader in performance eyewear, Oakley continues to advance sport technology and redefine the lifestyle market with patented optical innovations. Numerous patents have been awarded to the inventions behind the company’s High Definition Optics® (HDO®). HDO® virtually eliminates the problems of ordinary lenses, including distortion that bends light (so objects aren’t really where they appear to be) and optical flaws that magnify images in the manner of prescription lenses made for somebody else.

Since 1978, Oakley has led the way in maximizing lens style and technical performance. Right now, it’s only getting better for you. Oakley polarized lenses are engineered with a liquid infusion process that bonds the polarizing filter at the molecular level, eliminating the haze and distortion found in conventional technologies. Below are seven exclusive Oakley technologies that put our polarized lenses at the top of the game. We make the difference, and you reap the benefits when you strap a pair of Oakley’s on your head.

Whilst on the Tasman Shaun wears Oakley Radar Sunglasses. Radar features an interchangeable lens design that lets athletes optimize vision in any environment. A revolutionary Hydrophobic™ lens coating repels water, skin oils and debris, keeping the optics crystal clear. The frame architecture creates a cooling flow of air, and the design features an interchangeable nosepiece for a custom fit. The result is a new milestone in performance technology.

Oakley Sunglasses are available at all leading sunglasses stockists.
