Risk Management

Rowing across the treacherous Tasman from Australia to New Zealand is not without significant risks. Shaun has been preparing for this expedition for over two years and has the benefit of hearing the story of his father’s and the world’s only successful solo tasman crossing.

Shaun has gathered an Advisory Board which includes experts from disciplines Shaun knows are key to a successful crossing. Shaun is working closely with the Australian and New Zealand Rescue Coordination Centres, Maritime Authorities and Water Police to establish a passage plan that he is comfortable with.

Check back for further information on the risks involved in crossing the tasman and some of the ways Shaun is going about making his journey as safe as possible.

Ocean Surface Currents and Temperature

The CSIRO in Australia publish research on Ocean Surface Currents and Temperature helping the two most recent Tasman crossings, Crossing the Ditch and BASE Challenge. The currents and the temperature play a big role in when and in what directions Shaun will follow to make it across the Tasman.
